Common Test Cases

Standardize Test Processes

Problema: A skilled technician is hard to find. It is difficult to train an unskilled technician to know what to test, and what to look for during move, add and change projects, and troubleshooting as access network configuration changes with client location.

OneTouch AT’s AutoTest feature covers connectivity and performance of the access network allowing standardization of validation procedure, empowering the field team to be more productive as it ensures better understanding of network connectivity/performance after deployment and during troubleshooting. Ease of documentation of test results on Link-Live facilitates better communication between the field team and engineers/project managers off site, and reduces time to resolution as failure information is better known.

Iniciar

  1. Home screen with suite of tests from basic services to intranet or internet/public cloud.

  2. Multiple profiles can be defined that contain different sets of tests based on site/location/subnet that the OneTouch will locate.

  3. New profile loaded with complete set of pre-defined tests and thresholds. One click of the TEST button executes the entire suite of tests.

  4. Test started with basic service, such as cable, switch port and/or WiFi AP connectivity validate functionality of basic services such as DHCP/DNS/Gateway.

  5. The OneTouch will then perform throughput test to an end point on the Intranet and even to external networks as long as a performance peer is present.

  6. In the intranet or extranet, the OneTouch will then perform various user-defined tests to application servers, web, email, FTP, etc., with a pass, fail or warning result for each test.

  7. User can click on a test icon to review test result. Tools, such as path analysis and packet capture, are available to help troubleshoot further to detect the root cause.

  8. User can save the test result in PDF and/or XML format.

  9. Test report will include summary and detail test results of each test in the AutoTest, and optionally inventory of Wired and WiFi devices discovered.

Intermittent Network Performance

Problema: Some user at a site complains that “the Wi-Fi Network is slow” at one part of the office. One of the problems can be co-channel interference created by having too many access points on a channel.

OneTouch AT makes this task easy with full analysis of the Wi-Fi radio frequency health to detect, locate and resolve the problem.

Iniciar

  1. AutoTest profile configured to connect to SSID Studio2020. Studio2020AP is the AP used and it shows warning.

  2. Click on AP ICON to show the KPIs of the AP: signal strength noise, channel, 802.11 type.

  3. Scroll down to see Transmit rate, Retry rate, utilization and # of AP using the same channel (a warning is given when it is more than 3).

  4. Exit back to home screen & select Wi-Fi analysis to look at the health of the RF environment.

  5. Wi-Fi Analysis shows the all SSIDs present. For Studio2020, it shows there is only one AP on this SSID.

  6. Select the Channel ICON to show the Wi-Fi channels that the network is on. The current 802.11 and non-802.11 utilization on the channel is shown.

  7. Clicking on Show Active button allows user to review the overall utilization of all channels, in both 2,4 and 5GHz band. Notice channel 11 has 10 APs.

  8. Clicking on the channel 11 will drill down to view the % bandwidth utilized. Notice the number of APs and clients on the channel listed on the lower right.

  9. Select the AP ICON to see the APs that are on the channel 11. Are all these APs designed to be on channel 11?

  10. Click on the rogue AP in question to invoke the Tool for further investigation (locate or capture traffic to/from the AP). For good APs, we can classify them as Authorized for quick distinction.

Locating Wi-Fi Interferers

Problema: Some user at a site complains that “the Wi-Fi Network sometime is slow”: video stream halt, SKYPE call got choppy. Devices that transmit non-802.11 signal at the same frequency as WiFi devices can hog bandwidth and caused retransmission.

OneTouch AT has a special antenna that could detect, identify and locate these devices.

Iniciar

  1. OneTouch starts with a AutoTest. Click on Wi-Fi Analysis to investigate performance problems.

  2. Click on Demo_SSID Network to see AP/Network Details.

  3. It shows the AP’s signal strength is good, but there is an interferer.

  4. All the interferers affecting the Demo_SSID, since the start of the Wi-Fi Analysis, are displayed. Devices currently affecting are shown ACTIVE. We note that the Camera has high utilization most of the time.

  5. Drilling into the Camera reviewed that it has high power and persistently consumed 24% utilization. We can invoke the Tool to use the Locate features to find its location.

  6. The OneTouch AT comes with a unidirectional antenna that works with the locate function to track down the interferer source.

Internet Connection Problems

Problema: Some users in a remote office complain that they are unable to connect to the internet. A rogue home router/AP that labels itself as a DHCP server can hijack users and cause problems.

Let’s see how OneTouch AT detects and locates the rouge device.

Iniciar

  1. During AutoTest, we note that there was a warning icon on the DHCP service test.

  2. IP subnet offered by DHCP Server 10.250.9.114 from Wired network was incorrect subnet.

  3. 2nd DHCP offering available from Wired was the right subnet IP & right DHCP server.

  4. Use the Tool button to select Path Analysis - Wired to the 1st DHCP server.

  5. Path Analysis shows the switch port that the DHCP server is connected.

  6. Clicking on the device shows the port the device is connected and traffic loading on the port. Technician can then disconnect the rogue DHCP server quickly.

Remote Path Performance Tests

Problema: Having the ability to test the Wi-Fi and wired network together for a full path analysis is challenging to do. Since somewhere the wireless network connects to the wired network, performance testing of both networks is often overlooked.

OneTouch is the only tool in the industry that can simultaneously test the wireless and wired network together so you can see the end-to-end performance.

Iniciar

  1. A profile can contains multiple end-to-end Network Performance Test including unique test from the OneTouch Wired interface to its Wireless Interface.

  2. Each test can be programmed with different max throughput, lost limit, frame size, and test duration. DSCP and protocol port# can be set.

  3. Multiple performance tests with different Peer IP and test parameters can be defined in an AutoTest to verify performance of different network link paths.

  4. For testing against a peer, such as another OneTouch, the IP address of the peer will be needed along with the max throughput, loss limit, and user-specific frame size. Individual test can be invoked by pressing the TEST AGAIN button.

  5. Test results show the maximum throughput, jitter and latency at zero packet lost.

  6. The max throughput, packet loss at the worst throughput and latency at highest throughput for all frame size generated can also be plotted in chart format.
