Employees use vital banking applications to manage money and provide superb service, while Odeabank customers require flawless 24/7 online access to their bank accounts. With the variability of potential issues that can slow network performance, and customer satisfaction and worker productivity at stake, the company needed to manage application performance and ensure end-to-end visibility of the network, including the granular detail necessary to identify issues and analyze root causes.

 

Result:

Odeabank now uses TruView from NETSCOUT to monitor all of its applications, network infrastructure and more than 600 virtual servers from a central dashboard. The TruView solution provides end-to-end visibility, packet capture analysis and root-cause analysis. Recently, Odeabank experienced some slowness on an application running across all sites. With TruView, the IT team quickly identified the situation before users even registered there was a problem. The TruView application-monitoring dashboard showed IT that the network round-trip time was acceptable, but the application response time was high. The team quickly added new servers to the application pool and the issue was resolved.

Overview

Odeabank A.S. is a financial and banking services provider based in Istanbul, Turkey. A member of Bank Audi Group, the company employs 1,500 people across 50 branch locations in 20 cities. Connecting these employees and branches requires a large, complex network.

The Odeabank network includes more than 500 virtual servers, 300 switches, 100 routers and 10 firewalls on top of a growing collection of applications, databases and service providers. Larger branches connect via 60 Mbps channels, while smaller branches use 20 Mbps channels from two different service providers. The Odeabank headquarters includes a 200 Mbps connection with a separate 600 Mbps connection dedicated to its data center.
 

Challenges

Network performance is critical to Odeabank's success. Vital banking applications must run quickly to keep the company's 1,500 employees working efficiently on their computers, tablets, VoIP phones, smart TVs, smartphones, video applications and more – each of which requires a network running at optimal performance, 24 hours a day.

Customers also depend on the network to conduct their banking online. If these applications aren't running flawlessly, customer satisfaction plummets. Application performance management, end-to-end visibility, VoIP quality, QoS measurement, capacity planning and root cause analysis are all needed for employee productivity and customer satisfaction.
 

Solution

Odeabank selected TruView from NETSCOUT to monitor network and application performance from a single solution. TruView uses key data sets – including packet storage, application response time, transactional decode, Flow and SNMP – to measure performance metrics across the network and its applications. TruView delivers this information through a centralized console and provides IT with a clear picture of network and application performance.

When issues arise, TruView helps quickly isolate the root cause by enabling the IT team to access context-sensitive packet-level detail. The user navigates through the UI to understand problem domain isolation, which applications are running slow, what servers and sites are impacted, etc. At the same time, TruView builds a filter for relevant packet data. This allows the user to quickly access specific packet data at any point in the process from any UI screen.

"TruView embeds the most important data sources, such as packet, transaction, NetFlow/IPFIX and SNMP, and presents analytics in a time-correlated single dashboard view," added Tonyukuk Özden, IT network and security specialist with Odeabank A.S. "We have unbelievable visibility across our dispersed network."

Three members of the Odeabank networking team use TruView with full administrative rights, while other team members can use the solution with role-based access control. This allows control of assigned and related applications to enable monitoring, depending on specific roles and responsibilities.

Recently, Odeabank encountered slowness on an application running across all sites. With TruView, the IT team quickly identified the situation before users even registered there was a problem. The TruView application-monitoring dashboard showed the team that network round-trip time was acceptable, but the application response time was high. The IT team quickly added two new servers to the application pool and overcame the issue.

Odeabank also monitors its VoIP deployment by TruView. Beyond monitoring signal traffic, the company can quickly send all VoIP traffic across TruView for root cause analysis in emergencies.
